At least, I’m pretty damn sure it won’t. -_-
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Now I’m not the brightest when it comes to politics, but can’t Michigan’s government do anything right?

Raising the gas tax is the only way the infrastructure of this country and get any funding these days. If you want safe bridges and better roads you should be in favor of raising the gas tax. I hope it were to sweep the nation

I don’t like having to pay more for ANYTHING. But I can’t think of a more appropriate place to raise money for our roads than registration fees and fuel taxes.

Haha gas tax

But is this money actually gonna go to the things they say they are? Or is it just gonna magically gonna go to something else less important? If I recall, this isn’t the first time they’ve done this or proposed something like this.

If the revenue goes to the general fund it’s as good as gone.

Pretty much this. No one will ever solve this.

They have bigger books to balance than I can wrap my head around. As much as I want the money to go into roads and infrastructure, I can only hope it goes where it’s most needed, wherever that may be. A general fund is supposed to be flexible like that. But hopefully the transportation-related fundraising goes right back into transportation-related projects.

In California, we pay absolutely ridiculous registration and gas taxes...yet our roads are absolute shit. The money is spent on things other than transportation

We’re doomed!
Bah!
Illinois is in that same sinking boat.

This is exactly what I’m worried about happening, if it already hasn’t been happening here.

More than likely they’re already taking money from other places to fix the roads. This is how it is in most, if not all states. Will it make a difference in the roads though? Probably not - but it might keep money for other things from going into the roads.

National gas tax gets paid into the highway fund. I couldn’t find out with Google if Michigan has the similar setup. The Fed Highway Trust Fund is almost out of money, so the federal gas tax might be going up in the next couple years too.

K-roll, if you want me to break this down, I’ll do it after work tomorrow. Otherwise, I’ll just say: The irony is eye-watering. 5real.

Here’s a summary of the bill: http://www.legislature.mi.gov/documents/2015…

That would be very much appreciated, thank you.

I'd say yes because it would put people like me to work. But that money won't go there.

In the words of one of my favorite bands:
I’m driving here I sit, cursing my government,
For not using my taxes to fill holes with more cement.
While I’m all for a gas tax to improve our roads - especially in Michigan - I agree that this will likely make no difference.

How much ya wanna bet that this gets shot down in the senate and they go back to the drawing board. I love michigan but someday I’d like to live somewhere with a functioning local government.

I want to make two points here.
The issue with roads in Michigan is usually the foundation. They keep tearing up and resurfacing roads without fixing the actual problem.
Taxes are high already. There is plenty of funding for everything the state does and more. Corruption and mismanagement are ridiculous here.

Oh yes!!! Give it to me naow! In that color also. Perfection.
As far as politics, my dad always says that the best times and worst times of his life, he and only he was responsible for them, not the government.

pot for potholes. MIchigan rep proposed a bill that would legalize marijuana and use the taxes collected to fix our roads. It was shot down because our governor hates the idea of legal pot

Im for it.
Our roads are shit, our bridges are falling down and these taxes haven’t been raised in forever. Have you seen that John Oliver video on this topic but nationally? That federal gas tax hasn’t been raised since ‘93 .... wonder why everything is falling apart.
